On the evening of February 18, 1985, Vicki Carpenter, 24, visited Knicks Restaurant and Saloon at 7800 E. Hampden Avenue in Denver, CO, for the first time to take part in a fashion contest. Around midnight, she left to head home—but she never arrived. After spending the night calling and trying to locate her, her mother reported her missing the following day. Witnesses later said they saw Vicki get into her white-and-maroon 1967 Buick alone. Her vehicle was eventually found abandoned and disabled about a half-mile east of Knicks, in the parking lot of an apartment complex. The search continued until April 2, 1985, when children fishing discovered Vicki’s partially submerged body in the Cherry Creek spillway. Since 1985, Vicki's family continues to seek justice, while advocating for her.
