On , April 27th, 2017 Semaj Crosby, 16 months old was found deceased at a Joliet Township home under a heavy couch. Semaj was reported missing two days before being found underneath the couch. Law enforcement believe that Semaj was already dead before being put under the couch. Her cause of death was homicide by asphyxiation. In 2022, a settlement has been reached with the Department of Children and Family Services, for failing to protect Semaj and remove her from the home which was in squalor conditions. Semaj's homicide is still unsolved and her family continues to seek justice and advocate for her.
