In the early morning hours of November 11, 2006, Samuel Brooks and his wife Murlean Brooks were resting in their home when their attackers entered. It is still unknown if the attackers broke into the home, or if was someone that Samuel and Murlean knew and let in. The attack happened in Samuel and Murlean's bedroom. Samuel was shot multiple times and the fatal shot was to the side of his head at point blank range. Murlean was also shot multiple times but survived. No items were taken from the home except $80 Murlean said she had given Samuel earlier that day. According to detectives the suspects exited the home the same way they entered. All doors to the home were closed when detectives arrived. Shortly after the shooting Murlean said she checked the phones and there was no signal. She says she remembers stepping over Samuel, getting her car keys, and leaving to get help. She stopped on the side of the road and flagged down a passing motorist and that person called the police.
