Case Description
On January 19, 1986, Richard and Carol Emineth were working at the Mini Basket Convenience Store, which they co-owned on Canyon Ferry Road at the intersection of Wylie Drive, in a remote area about two miles north of Highway 12 in Helena, Montana. Reports indicate that two suspects, believed to be young men, entered the store, robbed it, and shot three people before fleeing the scene in a blue Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. According to the sheriff’s reports, Richard was found deceased in the parking lot, lying face up near a broken door. Carol was found unconscious behind the counter with a head wound. She succumbed to her injuries on January 20, 1986. A customer arriving at the store was shot twice as he got out of his vehicle. Despite his injuries, he was able to call the police using the phone mounted on the wall above the area where Carol was located. Investigators later found the store’s cash register empty. An arrest was made shortly after the murders, but the suspect was acquitted of all charges on June 20, 1986. Decades later, Carol and Richard’s family continues to seek answers and advocate for justice on their behalf.
