Case Description
**Update** - On May 8, 2024, police announced that the killing of Marie Honzell, 14, nearly 50 years earlier, had been solved through the use of DNA from the crime scene. A profile was created and compared to a public database, which resulted in the identification of the suspect, William Kernan Jr., who police say died in 2010 of natural causes.
On the evening of February 7, 1977, a woman returned to her apartment on North Nevada Avenue to find her babysitter, Marie Honzell, 14, dead in the master bedroom. The woman’s two children, ages 6 and 8, were home at the time of the attack but were unharmed and asleep when their mother discovered Marie’s body. She had been stabbed to death.
