On December 16, 2023, Leo Amir Weathers, just a year and a half old, was shot and killed inside his home in Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis Police responded to a shooting just after 2:00 a.m. on Wellons Avenue in the Frayser area, where investigators reported that gunfire struck the residence during a drive-by shooting. Leo’s family said the gunfire erupted suddenly, with multiple shots coming into the home. Leo was struck by a bullet and was rushed for emergency care, but he later died from his injuries. Leo’s death devastated his loved ones and drew outrage regarding gun violence and the reality that the most vulnerable can become victims without warning, inside the place they should be safest.
