***UPDATE*** - In February 2026, Juan Miguel Roman pleaded guilty to the murder of his former girlfriend, Emilia Ignacio. He's set to be sentenced in June 2026. The state is asking that he serve 30 years behind bars.
April 2024 - Juan Miguel Roman was arrested in the Mexican state of Veracruz. He now awaits extradition proceedings.
In December 2023, after Emilia's daughter and family started a social media campaign to help bring Jaun Miguel Roman to justice, someone contacted the family, claiming she knew Roman, who was living a new life in Mexico under the name Pablo. The woman called the authorities, and Roman was arrested.
Emilia Ignacio, a 28-year-old mother of two, was abducted and murdered in April 2014. Shortly after her body was found, police put out an arrest warrant for 34-year-old suspect Juan Miguel Roman, who was the victim’s boyfriend. But Roman, who also used the last name Balderas, managed to avoid arrest. Police believed he fled to Mexico.
