Jim Johnson Jr., often described by family as the “golden child” was admired by so many people.

“I looked up to him like a dad,” says Jim’s younger sister, Melody Bostic. “I cherish now and value every life lesson that he had taught me. Even back when I didn’t want to listen. I now understand those lessons.”

He was a man known by many names, each one reflecting a different piece of who he was. “Booger Bear,” “Suga Bear,” “Albino” and “Superhero” were all titles given to him over the course of his life and painted a portrait of who he was and the love he inspired in others.

When Jim was kidnapped and murdered in December 2013, so too was Melody’s superhero, his mother’s golden child and his children’s “Suga Bear.” His death took place in Orlando, Florida, and his murder remains unsolved, leaving his loved ones with only memories and unanswered questions as they struggle in his absence.

“My family has not yet really healed,” Melody says. “We don’t have closure.”

Jim was a strong leader in many areas of his life, including school, sports and at home. Being the oldest of four siblings, Jim quickly stepped into the role of peacemaker and mediator within the family. He grew up in Orlando alongside his mother and siblings. There, he played football at school and was popular among his peers. Some classmates called him “Albino” because his skin was significantly lighter than most students at the school. Even though he was different, that never stopped Jim from being a friend to all and loved by so many.

“Everyone loved Jim and got along with him,” Melody says.

From a young age, Jim was unusually wise and always gave his family sound advice. He was a shoulder to lean on and a firm foundation that held his family together.

He was a boy’s boy who loved nothing more than to play outside, work on cars and collect basketball figurines. He was especially close with Melody, who was four years younger. The two loved to play video games and roughhouse outside. Together, they spent countless hours in the fresh air playing kickball, dodgeball, riding bikes and jumping rope. Melody viewed him as not only her older brother, but as a protector— a superhero.

After graduating high school, Jim started a trucking company and enjoyed flipping houses. Even though it was hard work, he always made sure to put his family first.

“He was extremely big on family,” says his daughter, La’Erica. “Extremely.”

Jim had six children: three daughters and three sons. His oldest daughter, La’Erica, had a unique and special relationship with her father.

For the first 16 years of her life, La’Erica never knew her father. Her mother became pregnant with her at 17 and chose to raise her on her own without informing Jim. It wasn’t until La’Erica was graduating from high school that she finally connected with him through her aunt and uncle. They informed both La’Erica and Jim of each other’s existence, allowing them to set plans to finally meet.

Nerves quickly turned into relief as a true sense of acceptance and belonging overcame La’Erica.

“When we saw each other, he just gave me this giant hug and embrace,” says La’Erica. “It was like a weight lifted off me because I felt like, at the moment, I knew this is where I come from.”

La’Erica and Jim were two sides of the same coin. As they slowly got to know each other, she began to see parts of herself in her father. The way he talked, dressed and his love for movies were all things they had in common.

Jim, though he had been unaware La’Erica was his daughter, still harbored guilt for not being present in her childhood and made sure to make up for all the time lost. Together, they spent countless hours watching movies and talking about their favorite films, as they were both avid movie buffs. Jim especially loved comedy and he could talk about his DVD collection for hours. While getting to know one another, even the smallest moments were never taken for granted.

“It was like getting to meet your twin for the first time,” says La’Erica.

Jim was a family man through and through.

“He strived in doing his best for his kids, and I know his children miss him dearly,” Melody says. Jim played a very active role in not only his children’s lives, but also in the lives of his niece and nephews. He was a loving father, uncle, brother and son.

Jim’s mother, Ruby Vaughn, was especially close with her son. “He was just a good person all the way around,” says Ruby. Jim was always there for her and dropped everything to help when she needed it.

He loved abundantly and gave without expecting anything in return.

Jim’s favorite holidays were those that brought the whole family together. He hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, cooking for the whole family. During the holidays, he also participated in the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Every year, Toys for Tots delivers millions of toys to children in need. Jim loved to contribute to this program to help the children from his own community.

While Jim had so much to cherish in life, he always kept God at the center of it all. His relationship with the Lord was powerful and deeply important to him. He attended Majestic Life Church in Orlando, Florida every Sunday. Jim was a man of faith and character who made sure everyone around him was well provided for. His love for his family and for God shone through in everything he did.

“They took away a really really good person,” Melody says. “It has affected so many people’s lives.”

On December 6, 2013, 39-year-old Jim was last seen at Goolies Barber and Beauty on Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, where he had gone to get his hair cut by a friend. Around noon that day, Melody received a call from Jim’s friend stating he had been kidnapped, Melody became worried after hours passed. Jim was missing for five days before his body was found in a wooded area in Daytona Beach, just off South Beach Street, on Dec. 11. Investigators ruled the case a kidnapping and homicide but could not determine exactly how he was killed.

Jim had been the glue that kept his family together. Without him, they started to fall apart. “It’s like dropping a puzzle on the ground and the pieces are going everywhere,” says La’Erica.

La’Erica was at a friend’s house when she received the call that her father had died. She still remembers the last moment they shared. Jim loved to spoil his children and would often visit bearing gifts. He spent his final moments with his daughter doing what he loved most— providing for her. Jim was also protective of his children. La’Erica can laugh now at that final moment they shared, when she told him she had a boyfriend and recalls the look of comical surprise on his face.

When La’Erica received the news of her father’s passing, she felt as if she had lost all control of her life.

“It’s still hard because I feel like I didn’t have enough time,” says La’Erica. “It’s just a lot of regret and just sadness, to be honest, because I didn’t get to spend enough time with him— to get to know that person I was exactly like.”

Melody, who was among the first informed of Jim’s death, bore the weight of informing others. She asked investigators if she could see her brother but was denied. According to Ruby, they were not even allowed to see his face at the funeral, and he was buried in a closed casket. For years, Melody has pondered over why authorities refused to let her identify her brother, even questioning whether the man they buried was Jim at all.

“For many years I’ve wrestled with the question, if it’s really you in there? What if it wasn’t? What if you’re somewhere,” said Melody. “Your mind wonders.”

This uncertainty, along with the lack of any charges or arrests in the case, has left Jim’s family longing for answers.

The family’s faith has been a source of strength in the years since, as they place their trust in the Lord for answers.

If given one moment with her father, she would want him to know that she has given her life to God, becoming a devoted disciple to honor not only her heavenly Father, but her earthly one, Jim. “I would tell him, look at me. I’m doing good. I decided to change my life for the better,” La’Erica says.

“All we can do now is just place our faith and trust in God,” said Melody. “And I know one day soon He will bring closure and justice in His name.”
