This story is part of a collaborative project between Project: Cold Case and Flagler College.

Edward McClain was a “father figure and role model for our family,” said Sylvia McClain, Edward’s younger sister.  “He took us on dates to the movies, drove us, and even opened the car doors for my sister and I.”

Described by family as having a gentle soul and heart, Edward is sincerely missed by his family. The family considered Eddie as the glue that held them together. Sylvia said that her brother would often take his siblings with him. The family went to Disney World, where everyone had a great time.

“We have so many great memories of him,” Sylvia said. “Because we were raised on a foundation of faith, we pray that he will come home soon.“

Sylvia said that Edward loved everyone and made everyone feel special. An electrician by trade, Edward loved painting cars. Sylvia said that he could often be found in the garage painting his cars blue.

On November 20, 2000, Edward McClain vanished from his Jacksonville, Florida home. Edward answered a phone call and could be heard arguing. The family is certain that he was speaking to someone he already knew. The phone call made Edward furious and confused. He left about 30-minutes after the phone call and never came back.

Edward was last seen leaving his house in Jacksonville, Florida in his company work van. The van was returned to the house the next morning, but Edward was nowhere to be found.

Despite decades of investigation from the Jacksonville’s Sheriff’s Office, the disappearance of Edward McClain remains a haunting mystery.  Since his disappearance, law enforcement authorities have received anonymous tips. Edward’s case continues to symbolize the emotional toll that cold cases have on families and communities.

“All I want is Edward to come home to meet his family,” Sylvia said. “Edward’s disappearance has had a huge impact on his sisters as he filled the missing role of a father figure. Edward is a kindhearted, gentle, family-oriented, bright young person who has been missing for over 20 years.

Today, his story remains a call for awareness, urging the public to remember that even decades-old cases deserve justice.
