This story is part of a collaborative project between Project: Cold Case and Flagler College.

Willie Carraway was a man larger than life. His joy filled every room he entered, and his infectious smile and laughter left a mark on everyone around him. Born in a small rural town in Cross City, Florida, Willie was the youngest child in his family. He developed a strong work ethic early on, helping on his family’s farm from the age of five under the guidance of his older siblings. The values he learned there, hard work, faith, and perseverance, shaped the way he lived and raised his own children. His belief was simple: through effort, faith, and God’s grace, anything was possible.

Willie’s friends affectionately nicknamed him “Big Kuntry,” a name that captured his spirit and personality. It became more than just a nickname; it became a symbol of who he was and how he is remembered today.

A defining part of Willie’s life was his 22-year marriage to his wife, Niki. Their love story began on a Tuesday night at a nightclub, where they felt an immediate connection. For their first date two days later, Niki told Willie to call her back at a specific time, and he did, right on the dot. That small act showed her his sincerity and character. From that moment, she knew she would love him. Willie wasn’t like anyone else she had met; he was genuine, dependable, and loved her for who she was.

Together, Willie and Niki built a life full of laughter and adventure. Their favorite activities included bowling, beach days, movie nights (especially action films), church outings, and amusement parks. Willie had a particular love for roller coasters and anything that gave him a thrill. Niki misses his joking manner of picking at her and his playful spirit.

Willie was also known for his incredible work ethic and dedication to his job. A true blue-collar man, he poured his energy into his work and earned deep respect from his coworkers. His leadership and teamwork were recognized with the “Best Crew” award, a testament to his commitment and pride in his craft.

Outside of work, Willie’s adventurous side shone. He loved riding ATVs, jet skis, and visiting Busch Gardens, never turning down a good roller coaster. He and Niki enjoyed cruising together, especially aboard Carnival Cruise Line, where they created lasting memories. A lifelong football fan, Willie played through his youth and continued to celebrate the game by attending the annual Florida Classic with friends. He also had a passion for cars, especially classic Dodge Rams, and loved attending car shows. No matter where he was, Willie’s energy, humor, and warmth left a lasting impression.

Niki fondly recalls countless memories with Willie, but one that stands out is from a trip to his hometown, Cross City, Florida. As she ran down a country road, Willie chased her, laughing, while holding a large turtle. That playful moment perfectly captured his fun-loving nature. Niki describes him as a gentle soul with a heart of gold. Their relationship was full of joy, humor, and deep love. Whether they were teasing each other about dancing or splitting holidays between their families, their bond remained unshakable. Niki says she will love Willie until the end of time and will always fight for justice in his name.

On August 27, 2022, Willie Carraway was tragically shot and killed on the 1500 block of N. Nebraska Avenue in Tampa, Florida. He was spending time with friends in front of the Robert W. Saunders Public Library when the shooting occurred around 1:20 AM. Two other adult males were struck by the gunfire but were later released from the hospital.

In his honor, Niki founded Kuntry’s Konnections, a nonprofit that supports youth through an annual back-to-school giveaway in Willie’s hometown. Her mission is to eventually open a community center that promotes emotional awareness and positive communication among young people. “Nobody has taught young people, and even adults, how to regulate their emotions and solve problems,” she says. “Now, instead of communicating, we turn to violence too quickly.” Niki teaches children to identify “mouse problems” (things they can handle themselves) and “elephant problems” (things that need an adult’s help). She also partners with local organizations in Hillsborough County to raise awareness about gun violence. “He would be proud,” she says. “Proud that I’m continuing to fight for justice for him.”

Willie “Big Kuntry” Carraway is remembered by his wife, Niki, his children, grandchildren, and family as a man with a big heart, a kind soul, and endless love to give. His legacy lives on through the people he touched and the light he brought into every life he encountered.
