April Savoy Scheidel was a mother of 3 that had recently fallen on hard times. She had just moved in with a friend in Slidell, Louisiana in an attempt to get back on her feet when she was killed.
Just before Easter, in 2003, while visiting New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, April was shot while riding in a truck with two acquaintances.
Police say an argument broke out between those in the truck with April and a gunman that opened fire as the truck drove off.
April was shot once in the back and died a short time later at Charity Hospital. While an arrest was made early in the investigation, prosecutors declined to file charges citing “evidence problems”.
