September 11, 2022 | by Amelia Simmons This story is part of a collaborative project between Project: Cold Case and a University of North Florida Journalism class. ***UPDATE*** On March 5, 2024, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office announced charges in the 1998 cold case murder of Steven Davis. Donald Holmes II is currently incarcerated at Florida State Prison for a home invasion robbery in Escambia County in 2012. Investigators identified Holmes through a bloody fingerprint found at the scene. The fingerprint had been tested three other times over the years. On March 13, 2025, Donald Holmes II pleaded no contest in exchange for 12 years in prison for the killing of Steven Davis. His sentence for the killing will run the same time as his current sentence for home invasion robbery *Original Spotlight Article* Steven Davis loved Waffle House and he made friends with everyone he saw there.
